CASE STUDY 2 - ⏩HAZARD IDENTIFICATION,RISK ASSESSMENT AND RISK CONTROL⏪

CASE STUDY 2

         ⏩HAZARD IDENTIFICATION,RISK ASSESSMENT AND RISK CONTROL⏪

                                                                    QUESTION 1 :

Monday,March 11,2002,seemed to be a typical spring day at New Berlin West High School In New Berlin,Wisconsin, until something horrible unexpected occurred during a chemistry demonstration in the school auditorium.A chemistry teacher was igniting chloride and methyl alcohol mixtures to show the variety of chloride emissions  when a sudden brust of flames shot into the audience of students.

1.TYPE OF HAZARD : CHEMICAL HAZARDS.

Chemical hazards are present when a students is exposed to any chemical preparation in the workplace in any form(solid, liquid or gas). Some are safer than others, but to some student  who are more sensitive to chemical ,even common solution can cause illness, skin irritation or breathing problems.

BEWARE OF :

* Liquids like cleaning products, paints, acid, solvents(ESPECIALLY if chemicals are in an unlabeled container.

* Vapors and fumes that come from welding or exposure to solvents.

* Gases like acetylene, propane, carbon monoxide and helium.

2.PREVENTS THE INCIDENT.

*Students should wear safety spectacles when doing experiments.

*Students should follow relevant experimental procedures closely when doing experiments(when         only gently heating is required do not apply strong heating).

*During experiments, students should execute these techniques properly(shaking a test tube of             chemical liquids properly on heating, smelling gases evolved from a test tube by means of waving   the gases towards the nose, but not directly above the test tube).

*Teachers should ensure that students are aware of the relevant experimental technique before doing     experiment.

3. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
  1.  Face Shield
  2.  Dust/ Mist Respirator
  3.  Half Face Respirator
  4.  First Aid Kit
  5.  Eye Mash
  6.  Ear Muff
  7.  Rubber Glovers
  8.  Cotten Glovers
  9.  Fire Extinguishes
  10.  Fire Blanket
  11.  Coat and Lap Apron
  12.  Eye protection device
  13.  Respirator and Smoke Chamber
